U3A starts the New Year with a brand new programme. Monday mornings will be dedicated to AFRIKAANSE LETTERKUNDE KURSUS (A course on Afrikaans literature) in which well known academics and poets discuss poetry and literature.
In HUMAN PLANET we recognize that animals and other living organisms have adapted over time to the environment in which they exist. The imperative falls upon a living entity to change if it is to survive . This course shows dramatic examples of ways in which human beings have adapted over time, and will continue to do so, in very different environments.
A COUNTRY IMAGINED takes a somewhat unusual perspective on South Africa concentrating on the beauty of the natural world. It relates specific landscapes in South Africa to the art, dance, literature and music associated with the landscape and looks for the connections between the two.
Courses held on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.
Members R10.00. Non members R25.00.

U3A: OVERBERG: OPEN MEETING
A ROADMAP FOR SOUTH AFRICA
THURSDAY 16 FEBRUARY 2012 : APPROXIMATELY 18.00 (AFTER THE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING)
SPEAKER: JOHN KANE BERMAN,
CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER, SOUTH AFRICAN INSTITUTE FOR RACE RELATIONS
VENUE: SANDBAAI HALL
The year 2012 has a special significance in the history of South Africa since 1994. First, the African National Congress has already started celebration of the centenary of its founding in Mangaung, near Bloemfontein, in 1912. This has occasioned much introspection within the ruling party and much comment locally and internationally. Much of the external comment has been critical of the party for its role in government. Critics point to deficiencies in service provision, elitism in rewards to followers, corruption and, most recently, efforts to limit the freedom of comment on government actions by citizens and the media. In an article in Business Day on 5 December 2011, tonight’s speaker commented that many people “not least foreign governments and diplomats, [who] suddenly cannot believe that the ANC may not be the quasi-angelic liberal organisation they believed it was.” What further worrying aspects of the ANC will be revealed as its centenary year wears on?
Secondly, the ANC faces a further leadership struggle leading up to and in the Policy Conference in December 2012. Zuma’s leadership role will be under scrutiny and the influence of Julius Malema finally revealed.
In times when more and more people in South Africa and abroad are describing themselves as ‘baffled’ or ‘puzzled’ by recent developments in the country, John Kane Berman will explain why they should not be. He will also look at some of the issues likely to dominate the social, political and economic environment for the next few years.
John Kane Berman has held the position of CEO of the SAIRR since 1983. He has been the Editor-in-Chief of its annual S A Review for the same period. He has published 8 books on South Africa and hundreds of articles and conference papers. He speaks to many organisations each year. He was educated at Wits University and the University of Oxford. From 1973 to 1979 he held various positions on the weekly Financial Mail and from 1979 to 1983 he was a free-lance correspondent for newspapers in the UK, USA, Scandinavia, Europe, Australia and Canada.
