West Coast

Piketberg’s location is approximately 130 km north of Cape Town along the N7, and is snugly nestled at the foot of the sandstone Piket mountain range, within easy driving access to the Namibian border and the white beaches of the West Coast. The seaside village of Velddrif is a mere 30min from Piketberg .
Pulpetaan is aptly described by their 3 star rating guide as a Country Style B&B type accommodation. The house is perfectly set up for doing business in the area due to its central location on the N7 in the peaceful town of Piketberg. For the more relaxed visitor Pulpetaan is a convenient base to set out from and visit the local attractions.
Even with a strong emphasis on the business traveler Pulpetaan is also family orientated.

Recipe of the Month

The koeksister!
This doyenne of the South African tea table has seduced so many with her twisted syrupy goodness.
She has stripped people of their willpower and intentions to diet or lose weight.
The word koeksister is from Dutch origin and literally means cookie.
The koeksister is made by deep-frying dough and then dipping it in an ice-cold sugar syrup.
In South African we have 2 kinds of koekisters, the Afrikaans version and the Cape Malay version. The Afrikaans one is crispy on the outside and very saucy and syrupy on the inside, while the Malay version is soft and spicy, almost like a doughnut.
What very few people know, is that the koeksister has a very humble relative...the Brood Broer! (bread brother) Let me explain!
Whilst growing up, we lived a very abundant life. We wanted nothing. Love, laughter and good food were always there, but money was scares. So whenever we went on sport trips or field trips, mom packed food parcels with much love and care, because money for take-away food was not always there. One treat that my mom always packed, was a huge tin filled with golden-brown syrupy BroodBroers.
What on earth is a "Broodbroer" I hear you all ask?
I "Broodbroer" is a cube of bread that is deep-fried and then dipped into the same sugar syrup that you will use for koeksisters. Maybe it was just my mother's invention, but I can assure you I was the most popular kid on that bus. In my mind however, I envied the children who had the take-away money, but I suppose that is just how children are at that fragile age.
This past weekend, I attended my 30th school reunion and I cannot tell you how many of the "children with the take-away money" walked up to me asking me for my mom's Broodbroers. They had such fond and positive memories of our field trips and my mother's Broodbroers. How strange is that, while I had issues about having no money, these children had issues about their mothers not taking the time to pack something so special. Strange how life is like that. I think there is a deep life lesson to be learned here! Dankie Ma!
Brood Broers

Ingredients
1 loaf of white bread - not sliced bread and day old works best.
vegetable oil for deep-frying
For the syrup
4 cups sugar
500ml (2 cups) water
2 pieces fresh green ginger (each 5cm), peeled and crushed
2ml (½ teaspoon) cream of tartar
Pinch of salt
Grated rind and juice of ½ lemon
Method
Make the syrup a day in advance and cool overnight in the fridge. Heat water and sugar, allowing sugar to melt completely. Add the ginger, cream of tartar and the lemon zest and juice and bring to the boil. Boil for 5 minutes and cool down.
Slice the bread in thick slices, about 5cm each. Now cut off all the crusts and cut the bread in big chunks. Heat the oil in a pot( I use my wok) and fry the bread until golden brown. Remove with a slotted spoon, let the excess oil drip off and dunk in the syrup immediately. Remove from the syrup when the whole cube is coated and place on a wire rack so that excess syrup can drip off. Serve with a steaming mug full of coffee!!

Movember 2011 – Moustache Season is Now Open
Men across South Africa are once again preparing to donate their upper lips to Movember, the 30 day journey of Mo’mentous moustachery and grooming glory. The charity initiative which aims to raise money and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate and testicular cancer, has opened for the 2011 season of moustache finery.
Participants, Mo Bros and Mo Sistas, can now register at www.movember.com
To get involved Mo Bros are asked to register online and start the month of November clean shaven. Their emerging moustache will then become a ribbon for men’s health and the Mo Bros of the South Africa will become walking talking billboards for the 30 days of Movember. The growth of a new Mo inspires conversations about the often overlooked issues of men’s health. Female supporters ‘Mo Sistas’, are key to the success of the campaign acting as ambassadors, spreading the word and showing their support.
Last year in South Africa, 10,000 Mo Bros and Mo Sistas took part in the campaign and raised R 1.3 million for men’s health. All funds raised in South Africa go directly to the Cancer Association of South Africa’s (CANSA) men’s health programmes for prostate and testicular cancers.
Now entering it’s third year in South Africa, the new Movember South Africa website allows Mo Bros and Mo Sistas to set up and build teams and join networks to compete against each other, as well as create their own personal fundraising pages, order Mo merchandise and take part in competitions including the chance to win a trip to Mombasa courtesy of Schick.
For more information on Movember, to register for the campaign and to find out more about getting involved,

The upshot? FatSak won't lose its shape or drop its stellar comfort ranking.

Promise Olives is a South Africa located "all-denomination" Christian ministry project aimed at planting 20,000 olive trees in an ideal setting where as the trees grow and mature, the harvest from the trees will be used to provide funds to uplift the poor, feed hungry children and create jobs and skills development programs. Our goal is to teach disadvantaged people learning how to support themselves.
The olive trees are being planted on an 800 acre farm outside the West Coast town of Porterville and is protected in a trust created by the founders of Monte Christo Ministries (MCM), a Paarl, South Africa based ministry. MCM was founded in 2004 by a group of American and South African team members and since then has developed an international following due to its innovative social-entrepreneurial approaches to serve the needs of thousands.

What is Decolite™?
Decolite™ encompasses a group revolutionary decorative moulded systems which are extremely durable and lightweight for the replacement of non structural concrete and GRC elements externally, and high quality finished features internally. The systems allow flexibility in design and may be used in a variety of applications which suit the functional and aesthetic requirements of any project. Decolite™ is not only used in the construction of new buildings, internally and externally but also in the renovation of existing buildings in retail, corporate, hospitality, leisure and residential markets. The product which has evolved from an innovative solution for complicated exterior embellishments, has become a sought after product for interior design solutions.
There are essentially three systems of production, namely:
CNC cutting of high density EPS forms which are encapsulated in a tough polyurea outer casing.
Forming shapes in various pliable moulding materials for low pressure in mould casting.
High pressure injection moulding of forms from precision engineered moulds.
Each system of manufacture has its unique advantages which are suited to the requirements of the end product, from high precision mass production to custom production of unique forms.
Surface finishes range from smooth aggregate to high gloss automotive finishes, and from solid opaque forms to translucent and luminous forms depending on the type of material used and the system of manufacture.
