Piketberg

Piket-bo-berg
Farmers Market

Every last Saturday of the month up on the mountain there is a morning farmers market.
A reminder to all that it is again time to stock up on all those special goodies at the Piket-Bo-Berg Farmers Market. Besides all the fresh fruit and veggies, meat from Bert, and Elna's not-to-be-missed olive oil, there will be a variety of mushrooms on sale along with some continental sausages. The iced tea as offered by Retha from Stall-a-bit will be available to quench your thirst as we glide through the last summer heat or you can try to cool down with the iced smoothies from Mariska. Whatever the weather, there will be something for you - Piet and Mercia covers both hot or cold with their coffee or refreshing home brewed ginger beer and enjoy one of Jane's croissants with your coffee. Rose, Ineke and Sandra will surely have a supply of black figs and don't miss out on their chicken pate, aromatherapy products and other home brews. Keep an eye out (and some space) for Garry's delectable surprises - from special sauces to rich and creamy cheese pates. Honey snobs will find a variety of honey - from local fare at Bob's table to Karoo Gold at the Duncan's table. Still on honey: Pam and Colin will have their Mead and some basmati rice as well as all their other fancy fare. Anel is sure to supply some sweets and homemade shopping bags to bag all your goodies. Enjoy the table of Oregon & More with their variety of goodies. Come and enjoy the faces and fare and find those not-mentioned specialities only available at the Piket-Bo-Berg Farmers Market.

PIKET-BO-BERG PLAASMARK

From the Nosy Rosy West Coast kitchen

Summer seems set to stay with temperatures keeping salads on the menu

.

In our pursuit for the perfect salad dressing the one below is right up there with the best.

Honey & Apricot Balsamic Salad Dressing

1/2 cup canned drained apricots
1/3 cup balsamic vinegar
1/4 cup clear honey your favourite flavour
2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
1 clove garlic
1 teaspoon dry Italian seasoning
1/4 teaspoon salt and pepper
1 Tablespoon oil (Olive)
In blender or food processor, combine apricots, vinegar, honey, mustard, garlic and seasonings; blend until smooth. With motor running, slowly drizzle in olive oil until combined. Best made an hour before serving to allow flavours to develop. Flavour will intensify if left to develop overnight and you will lose the subtle apricot.

If you have served this with a crusty bread you will know what to do with juices sending back a very clean plate

Let us know what you think.

Piket-bo-Berg

Nosy Rosy is not only committed to bring you all that is Hip Hot and Happening but also people who do interesting things.
One such person is a quite spoken, gentle being called Reine Ackermann who lives on a farm on top of Piketberg Mountain, Piket-bo-Berg. He has been writing short stories for the past few years and has started a blog, Little Human Being as a way to share some of his illustrations and stories.
“We live in an ever accelerating world and at times it seems like it is spiralling out of control. Little Human Being is dedicated to recognizing and remembering the highest aspects of our humanity.
Externally there are many aspects that divide, but it is our humanity that unites us.” Quote Reine

Now if that is not enough to keep you enchanted,

Reine received his B.Econ with a major in Commercial Law from the the University of Stellenbosch.

While some answer the call of the corporate world, Reine was drawn to the adventures waiting in the Himalayas, Andes and Amazon Jungle. Armed only with a pen and later a camera Reine has spent many months living and learning with cultures far removed from the beaten path.

His passion for crystals and minerals has led to him sourcing and supplying mineral specimens for collectors and metaphysical healers across the planet.
Reine has been trading in mineral specimens for over 15 years. This interest has taken him across the planet from India and Nepal to countries across South America, Africa and Europe.

Currently Reine’s private collection stands at about 300 specimens, with this number remaining fairly constant as he tries to upgrade rather than add pieces.

“I decided to concentrate on rare, interesting and aesthetic specimens from areas across Namibia and South Africa. “ Reine

MR CAT & the JACKAL

Mar. Cat & The Jackal was conceptualized at the beginning of 2007, although the name of this music project was at that stage not yet found.

The inspiration for this project came naturally while Gertjie Besselsen and Jacques du Plessis were working on the Theatrical Music Score for the Award winning, Marthinus Basson, theatre production, ‘Die Storm’, for which they received a KANNA nomination. While working on this project they experimented with instruments like Xylophones, glockenspiels etc. and consequently found tremendous inspiration for their own project.

With a perfect combination of the understanding of, and the passion for, interesting instruments…and exceptional musical genius, they incorporated these instruments in songs already written by them and voila! Mr. Cat and The Jackal were born! They thought, what the hell and went ballistic on instruments like the Accordion, Lap-slide, Bouzouki, Melodic a, Kalimba and a load of percussion instruments, to only name a few! Soon afterwards the name ‘Mr. Cat & The Jackal’ emerged out of thin air and a five piece band was formed.

Gertjie and Jacques started performing with muso’s who came and went and was finally joined permanently by the talented and groovy, JC Visser on bass, Bernard Willemse on light percussion and Pierre Theron on low percussion.

Since then they have been recording an album at their own studio, making some of their own instruments, creating and writing songs, Performing live, in and all around Cape Town, Creating a whole repertoire of theatre soundtracks (from Peter Pan to more serious stuff), and made a music video.

ADENCO 400 WILL AGAIN BE A DARLING COMMUNITY PROJECT

The Adenco 400, opening round of this year’s Absa Off Road Championship on
March 11 and 12, has again been turned into a community project by the
Hamlet of Darling in the Western Cape.
Local landowners, businesses and schools have all thrown their weight behind
the event which this year will incorporate about 30 kilometres of new route.
The event is organised by the Cape Peninsula Motorcycle and Car Club with
route planning and other issues now in their final stages.
“The response from the Darling community and people in surrounding areas has
again been tremendous,” said route director Bill Bright. “They have again
turned the race into a community project and this has made life a lot easier
for the organising team.
“We have also found about 30 kilometres of terrain that has never been used
before, and that will add a little extra interest for competitors.”
Bright added the route this year would not traverse the Mamre Trust and
Kloof areas, but would now include sections on the famous Groote Post wine
estate and the Oatlands Dairy.
“Although there is still some work to be done on finalising the route we are
happy that the new sections will add an additional challenge to the event,”
Bright added. “The route takes in a wide range of terrain and we have
utilised just about every hill and kopje in the area.”
Race headquarters will again be at the Darling Club where the People Parc
Ferme facility, the social hub of the event, will be in full swing. The
race will this year be run over three loops of approximately 120 kilometres,
and this will increase activity in the Designated Service Park (DSP) and
People Parc Ferme where spectators can meet and mingle with drivers,
co-drivers and technical crews.
The event will start with the Donaldson Prologue at 12:00 on the Friday. The
prologue will be run over a route of around 45 kilometres and will determine
start positions for the race proper the next day.
The race proper will start at 08:30 at the Darling Club and a user friendly
route offers numerous spectator viewing points all within easy access of the
start/finish and DSP. Public access to the start/finish/ DSP and spectator
points is free of charge, and spectator guides will be available at race
headquarters

ACNE AND LIGHT

HOW DOES IT WORK?
COMPILED BY: DR WHITAKER

So you have been told you have got acne and want to know more about it!? Firstly, the whole process revolving around "pimples" starts at the oil-glands. Before puberty they do nothing, but with the onset of hormone production those glands get stimulated and start producing "sebum" - oil.
Now the hormones are up and down at puberty and that's totally normal - but those poor oil-glands don't know what to do. So with every "sebum burst" pores get blocked (blackheads/whiteheads) and after that the oil can't go anywhere: it builds up under the skin forming that red bump that is commonly known as a "zit". It happens fast: from nothing to a spot can be 6 hours.
So what do we do about it: Firstly we must try and open the pores: we do that with creams like Differ!n, Benzac or Brevoxyl. Those chemically dissolve the "plugs", then we need to do something about the germs that just love to feed on those "oils pots" (and turn them into pussy pimples). For this we can use antibiotics but the problem is that the "acne-age" can go on for years and it's not good for the system to be on antibiotics for a long time. So that is where "light” therapy comes in: a totally natural way to clear acne without the side effects of any tablets.
The treatment consists of 10 sessions: 1 blue and 1 red light - each lasting ± 20 min- per week. The blue-light kills the germs and the red light goes deep into the skin and shrinks those oil-glands. They word hand-in-hand but can't be given on the same day! The skin usually looks best after the blue (so use that one just before the weekend)
Normally there is no "flare" meaning that the skin does not get worse before it gets better, After the 5 week treatment the skin continues to improve over the next 12 weeks. Some patients need a second cycle after that but often one can just continue with the areas and do another cycle if it flares again.
Most forms of acne respond very well to this treatment but there are some - often genetic - forms which can lead to scarring - in which case oral contraceptives (i.e. Diane) or oral retinoids (i.e. Roaccutane) may become necessary. So in the few cases where it does not work there are alternatives.
Remember: Acne is a dynamic process, it "comes and goes" so don't get frustrated, don't expect miracles but wait for the treatment to work -and then you should be happy with the result.
And the final comment: Try to resist the strongest temptation!! Your skin has only got 2 enemies; the hormones and your own two fingers: if you "attack" your skin and try to "squeeze" those pimples, they take ages to go away and they might even scar! So leave your skin alone!!! Cover up if you want to, but wait for the treatment to do its job.
CREAMS
• All acne creams dry out the skin
• To reduce irritation dilute creams with water first (i.e. start off with ½ - ½) – If the skin gets red and flaky, dilute it more the next night, if not, make it a bit stronger.
• Usually after one month one can use it straight out of the tube.
Zineryt and Dalacin T are alcohol solutions for spot control (i.e. use them on new pimples in the morning)

PLEASE NOTE:
ACNE TAKES 2 MONTHS TO IMPROVE SIGNIFICANTLY!!!
