Featured Area on the West Coast

KapteinsKloof

Kapteinskloof is a fertile valley at the foot of the Piketberg mountain range situated between the towns of Piketberg and Velddrif. Farming in the area is predominantly, oranges, rooibos, buchu and grape vines. After spending the day driving through the Swartland the kloof is an oasis. The Kloof boasts with an abundance of bird life. Sightings of Bat-eared fox, Grysbok, Porcupines and Blue cranes are daily occurrences
You can hear the baboons at night, and leopards frequent the area. Kapteinskloof has an abundance of wild flowers in the spring and it is an excellent base for further exploration of the West Coast and Namaqualand flower regions.
About 8km towards the end of the valley lies the Banghoek Nature Reserve, where you can enjoy nature walks and discover bushmen paintings.
50 km to the West lies Velddrif, Port Owen and the sea with kilometers of un-spoilt beaches.
Piketberg is about 35km to the east where you can do some basic grocery shopping. From here it is only a short drive up the Versfeld Pass to the top of Piketberg mountain, which is a beautiful fruit and protea growing area. There you can also visit Excelsior Farm for scenic mountain outride’s on sure footed horses.
The quaint town of Aurora is famous for its colourful spring flower display and Helmut's unique restaurant, which serves excellent home cooked meals.
Elands Bay lies about 80km to the north west, famous as a cult surf spot and for its magnificent crayfish. The nearby Verlorenvlei is a Ramsar site of national importance and a birdwatchers paradise which provides habitat for over 200 bird species.  www.ramsar.org  (info courtesy of Old Kaptainskloof Guest House)

Our guesthouse is situated on a pretty little farm in the West Coast region of the Western Cape, halfway between Piketberg and Velddrif, about 180km north of Cape Town. It is nestled in the beautiful valley of Kapteinskloof and is one of the oldest original Homesteads of this area.
In 1988 the playwright Pieter Fourie started to renovate the houses, which date back to 1831. Through his love and passion for old architecture and his dedication to detail he managed to retain the Sandveld character of the homestead, which is both simple, yet charming.
When we, Marc and Kerstin de la Rue, discovered this little Gem back in 2002, it was love at first sight and we have made it our home since then - together with an assortment of four-legged family members.
We do farming on a very small scale, but mostly we enjoy our horses, dogs and other animals and the simple lifestyle this place offers. Tranquility and peacefulness seem to emanate from the whitewashed walls and permeate the surroundings - qualities which we highly appreciate and which we would like to share with you.
Go for walks, bring your mountain bike, go for a drive off the beaten track, admire the spring flowers, take a swim in our fresh, spring water pool nestled in an orange grove or simply take a good book find a spot under a tree and let time pass you by...

Koringberg Up Date

Koringberg is planning a Car Boot Sale Saturday the 18th. June in the village.
The response to the idea has been fantastic. This is going to be a boot sale with a slight difference. As it is being held in the platteland the concept has been slightly adapted to the area. All boots are welcome as well as bakkies and small trailers. The idea is to give not only growers of fresh produce in the area the opportunity to move some of their excess produce but for those in the surrounding communities to have an outlet for their hand/homemade crafts at a venue other than the conventional morning market set up with tables. The sight for the parking of your vehicles will be confirmed as soon as the amount of space needed has been established.

So, if you got it and don't want it, put it into the boot and flog it.

If you wish to book a space for yourself or need more info please contact; Nicky on 022 423 8055 or email nicky@agrizone.co.za

Org de Rac Organic Wine Estate

We at Org de Rac Organic Wine Estate believe that healthy, well-balanced plants have the ability to protect themselves against most predators and diseases. Our grapes are grown in previously untouched, healthy soil, carefully nurtured with only natural compost and organic nutrients. In order to control mildew disease, we have planted the vineyards to take best advantage of the prevailing wind direction to allow natural drying of the leaves.
Cover crops planted between rows provide additional organic nutrition, while earthworms bred in our vermiculture facility aerate and enrich the soil, improving its living quality. Our environmentally friendly pest-control methods include a small army of ducks that patrols the vineyards, ridding the vines of snails and insects.
Drip irrigation, focusing the water where it is needed, conserves this valuable resource.
Our approach at Org de Rac stems from a deep respect and commitment to the natural environment, the people involved in making our wine and the people who will finally enjoy our wine.

Hot Cross buns

First a little bit of History from Wikipedia
In many historically Christian countries, buns are traditionally eaten hot or toasted on Good Friday, with the cross standing as a symbol of The Crucifixion. They are believed by some to pre-date Christianity, although the first recorded use of the term "hot cross bun" is not until 1733 it is believed that buns marked with a cross were eaten by Saxons in honour of the goddess Eostre (the cross is thought to have symbolised the four quarters of the moon) "Eostre" is probably the origin of the name "Easter". Others claim that the Greeks marked cakes with a cross, much earlier.
According to cookery writer Elizabeth David, Protestant English monarchs saw the buns as a dangerous hold-over of Catholic belief in England, being baked from the dough used in making the communion wafer. Protestant England attempted to ban the sale of the buns by bakers but they were too popular, and instead Elizabeth I passed a law permitting bakeries to sell them, but only at Easter and Christmas.

NOW FOR THE IMPORTANT PART.

TO SAY I ENJOY EATING HOT CROSS BUNS COULD BE CLASSIFIED AS THE UNDERSTATMENT OF THE YEAR. TOASTED WITH COLD BUTTER, MELTING AND RUNNING OVER THE SIDES AND DOWN MY WRIST OR SLICED OPEN, BUTTERED, SLICES OF CHEESE ON TOP THEN GRILLED UNTIL THE CHEESE MELTS, BUBBLES AND STARTS TO BROWN.

OH! WHAT JOY EVEN THE BURNT PALLET IS WORTH IT.

I AT LAST HAVE FOUND PERFECTION.

No hard bits, just raisins and cinnamon and a soft cloud of dough baked to perfection (with a cross on top of course)

Where can these baked delights be found.

Nicky Lategan Butchery Moorreesburg.

If Hot cross buns are not your thing they also sell the best of all things from a butchery. There is also a Coffee Shop. They stock a large variety of tuisnywerheid goodies.

Nicholas is always experimenting with salamis and cold meats and biltong.

This is a family business, run with passion.

PHOTODYNAMIC THERAPY (PDT) INFORMATION

Compiled by Dr. D.K. Whitaker, Dermatologist

You have been prescribed PDT or Photo Dynamic Therapy - so how exactly will you be treated?
PDT is a non-surgical treatment of skin cancer or pre-cancerous lesions. So you could either have Solar Keratosis or a Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) or a Bowens.
Solar Keratosis is usually red and scaly and occurs most commonly on the face, the head (in balding men) and the forearms and hands. Initially they come and go but finally they are there all the time. If left untreated ± 1 % of those lesions turn into skin cancer per year - that's why we treat them!
A BCC or Bowen is already skin cancer and BCC's occur most commonly on the face and back while Bowen's is usually found on arms and legs.
. .
Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer worldwide and in particular in our country. Almost everybody has had enough sun damage in his or her life to develop skin cancer when we get older.

The most common treatment for Solar Keratosis is Liquid Nitrogen (freezing them), while skin cancers are usually removed surgically. This obviously leads to scarring, which can be subtle if well done but never the less as skin cancers are almost always multiple this can be a major cosmetic problem.
That is why PDT was developed in Europe. To find a treatment which is equally effective but doesn't leave you with scars.

So how does it work?
First we apply a cream, which is called "ALA", 'also known as Levulanic acid, or Metvix (Methyl-Levulanic acid), a compound related to Bilirubin and Porphyrins (substances produced in your liver). All cells in the body need this compound, but abnormal cells absorb it faster than normal cells. The difference between the creams is that Metvix penetrates deeper, so this is what we use for the skin cancer, while we use the ALA for the pre-cancerous lesions. After we apply the cream we cover it with a Tegaderm dressing to allow it to be absorbed. After a period of 3-4 hours we take the dressing off and apply a light, which is visible red light. This light is not infrared or laser, just a very strong visible red light (635nm).
The energy from this light activates the cream and this produces Oxygen radicals. Those radicals destroy all cells that have absorbed the cream - so it destroys abnormal cells but not your normal cells.
Now while those cells get destroyed and die (which is worst during the 8-16 minutes of treatment depending on which lamp we use) it is painful- so we usually give you a Pre-medication 1 hour before the treatment. This means that someone has to drive you. If there are small spots only, we can use a local anesthetic (then you can drive yourself home).
In the following 24 hours it will feel like very severe sunburn: the skin will turn red, sometimes swollen, some crusting and oozing can occur if the lesions were deep.

After care treatment:
1. To clean your skin use 1 heaped tablespoon salt water (dissolved in a small basin of lukewarm water) instead of using soap (twice a day).
2. If there is crusting/oozing from the skin, take face cloth - DO NOT USE COTTON WOOL - and soak in salt water and leave on affected area for +- 10 mins to soak, and then wipe off crusts. It does not matter if there is a bit of bleeding. Apply Bactroban afterwards (thin layer).
3. It is very important to keep the area well moisturised with aqueous cream (3 to 4 times a day) - you can apply the aqueous cream over the thin layer of Bactroban.
4. To relieve pain, use an ice-pack on the treated area (frozen peas work just as well and are soft).
5. In those first 24 hours it may be necessary to take more Stopayne (as prescribed).
After that the area usually heals within 1-2 weeks. The skin will then peel off (like in sunburn) and heal completely. Although it will be very unsightly for those 1-2 weeks the end results are always good.
One more word regarding the pain: the pain depends on the amount of sun damage. Sometimes it is difficult to know beforehand exactly how bad it is going to be. However it is always manageable with the Stopayne.
The reddening - which is seen after the healing - can also take up to 6 weeks sometimes, even months to disappear. Again this is an individual reaction but is never permanent.
The clearance or cure rate with this treatment is comparable to that of surgery but the cosmetic outcome is always better.
