Cape Namibia Route

Piketberg’s location is approximately 130 km north of Cape Town along the N7, and is snugly nestled at the foot of the sandstone Piket mountain range, within easy driving access to the Namibian border, the further reaches of the West Coast and white beaches.
Piketberg was inhabited in the early days by the San people, followed by the Kogikwa, a Khoi-Khoi tribe, and evidence of their artwork can still be found in the rock art drawings scattered in shelters around the region. As a result of the numerous cattle rustling activities of the Kogikwa leader, Gonnema, the name of the “Piketberg” was first used. Piquet is an old Dutch name for an outpost or “picket” and several of these small military outposts were established to keep the cattle rustling activities of the Khoi-Khoi tribes in check.
During the early 1800’s, the first settlers began to establish themselves on farm around the Piketberg mountain and in December 1835, Sir Benjamin D’Urban granted to the district the farm Grootfontein, and an impressive Dutch Reformed Church in Neo-Gothic style was built by Carl Otto Hager, this led to the gradual development of a larger congregation and the beginnings of a new town.
Piketberg today is a agricultural support hub to many of the surrounding farms and smaller towns like Velddrift, Aurora, Goedeverwacht, Witterivier, Koringberg, Porterville, Eendekuil and Redelingshuys. It is also sufficiently progressive in that it offers a variety of businesses and an outstanding infrastructure together with numerous sporting facilities in peaceful surroundings.
Piketberg proudly showcases some of its National Monuments and historic buildings throughout the town and district: the Dutch Reformed Church; the Synagogue (which now houses many varied and interesting local artefacts); the old water mill on the farm Deze Hoek (meaning this corner) as well as the two Moravian Mission stations of Goedverwacht and Wittewater with their stone and clay houses and gaily painted windows and door. In front of the Piketberg High School is the cannon which was once mounted on the summit of the Piketberg and used to signal the community below of any impending dangers or the arrival of new ships in Table Bay requiring fresh produce, in close proximity is Dunn’s Castle which was designed by Sir Herbert Baker.
A “must do” whilst in district of Piketberg is a leisurely drive up the Versveld Pass, built with three loops to allow the ascent of ox wagons. This pass was named after J. Versveld who purchased land atop the Piketberg in order to farm tobacco. Today the Piket-Bo-Berg is a hidden gem, its cultivated plateau has become renown for is apples, peaches, pears and recently the export quality Protea and Buchu herbs.
Take the time to stop en route ... for breathtaking views that look down over the plateaus offering bountiful valleys with an abundant undulating wheat fields, yellow flowering canola fields or sloped vineyards ... an ideal destination to enjoy lazy,slow-paced country days.
If one is looking for a quite lifestyle with country hospitality.….this is the place to explore.
