INDULGE ALL YOUR SENSES AT THE
11TH RIEBEEK VALLEY OLIVE FESTIVAL

SET ASIDE 7 and 8 May this year as a weekend to indulge your senses. The 11th Riebeek Valley Olive Festival in conjunction with Cape Town Routes Unlimited (CTRU) will be held over this weekend, showcasing the very best of the food and wine, art and music of the twin Swartland towns of Riebeek Kasteel and Riebeek West.
THE RIEBEEK VALLEY, nestled at the foot of the impressive Kasteelberg - an hour’s easy drive from Cape Town, is a popular weekend destination for urbanites looking for a taste of relaxed country living.
And you’ll get more than just a taste – the Riebeek Valley Olive Festival, while indeed celebrating that hallowed fruit, invites visitors to explore much more, and with all their senses. It’s a weekend carnival of food and wine, art and music, activities and events.
MORE
The twin towns of Riebeek Kasteel and Riebeek West pull out all the stops on 7 and 8 May 2011, when the colourful village characters join forces with local farmers to put on one of the most popular festivals in the Western Cape. It’s with good reason that this festival – an official event on Cape Town Tourism’s ‘Cape of Great Events’ Calendar – was named last year’s winner of the West Coast Tourism Awards in the ‘tourism event’ category.
Join the thousands of visitors who flock to the valley to sample the very best of the region’s food, wines and creativity – including, of course, olives in every shape and form.
Olive oil takes on a whole new twist when flavoured with lemon, basil, chillies or truffles. Or you can stick to the basics and take home a bottle of the unadulterated variety. The fruit itself comes in too many delicious forms to count: black and green olives in a huge variety of marinades, from rosemary and garlic to lime and blueberry; smoked olives, dried olives, olive-chocolate salami, jams and tapenades; and – a nod to the premium wine of the valley – olives infused in Shiraz.
And once your taste buds have been satisfied, you can treat your skin: olives form the basis for a sweeping selection of beauty products, from skin scrubs and lip balms to soaps and massage oils. Lovingly prepared and beautifully packaged, these are the perfect gifts for someone special.
The Valley is also known for its wines, and the estates and cellars will be bringing out their best: white and red (and white from red), wooded, bush vine, sparkling, sweet and dry, everyday-drinking blends and lay-down-and-keep treasures. There will be wine-tastings aplenty, with opportunities to talk to the winemakers and cellar masters.
MORE
Now firmly on the map as a foodies’ favourite, the Riebeek Valley’s eateries will also be showcasing their fabulous offerings. Go upmarket with French haut cuisine; relax in a leafy courtyard while nibbling on tantalising tapas, or fill up on crusty pizzas with seasonal toppings. Stalls will offer food-on-the-move, from the Valley’s now-famous ‘babbelas burgers’ (breakfast in a bun) to fresh-fried samoosas, and home-baked sweet treats like koeksisters and cakes to country-style pies with a variety of fillings – and much more.
With taste and smell satisfied, the other senses are equally indulged. This artists’ haven has grown to encompass painters, sculptors, performance artists, musicians, dancers and actors, and their myriad talents will be on show at formal and informal performances running throughout the weekend.
For visitors who want to stay over, the Riebeek Valley offers a range of accommodation to suit every taste and pocket, from self-catering cottages on the surrounding farms to B&Bs in the towns, and two grand old-world hotels.
With something for everyone, this is one festival not to be missed.

Nosy Rosy is proud to introduce you to Nina Timm a caterer, blogger and mom who will be taking over the recipe of the month.

Growing up as a country girl in a huge Afrikaner family, my passion for food is so deeply rooted, that it has become an all consuming hobby/career. To socialize with friends and family without good food being part of the celebration, is almost unthinkable. I grew up with wholesome food with tons of flavor and to this day bland food will not be honored with a place on Nina's plate.
After teaching learning disabled children for 15 years, I ventured into the catering business where I did functions from 10 – 1300 people. My priorities changed somewhat when my 2 children were born, but my passion for food and my desire to have a creative outlet in this field brought me to the world of the www. For a complete computer novice like me, running a food blog, was quite a daunting task at first, but soon the passion was back and since 2007 I have been blogging over at www.my-easy-cooking.com almost daily from 5am.
My Easy Cooking shares easy recipes and ideas for effortless cooking. These tried and tested recipes have all been beautifully captured in colorful images that will make your mouth water and also inspire you to try new ideas with your own personal touch. From Professional cooks to 1st time amateurs, each and every suggestion will unlock a hidden potential within you and before you know it you will be handing out recipes not to mention second helpings
Nina is known on RSG and Radio Tygerberg as SA's Kuberkok/Cyberchef.
On RSG Nina features recipes from other SA bloggers and once a month Nina goes and cooks something in the studio. The slot airs on Thursday mornings after 9,normally between 9-9.20.
On Thursday afternoons Nina does a show called Huis en Spys on Radio Tygerberg at 15h10. Normally a recipe from her blog site.

This Months Recipe

With Easter behind us, I am sure you all had your fair share of cooking, so cooking or eating another big meal is simply inconceivable. Another problem to face is what to do with all the leftover lamb. Well, your problems are solved! With this delicious sandwich you will have maximum flavor with minimum effort in the kitchen. Sounds like a winning combination to me!
Left Over Lamb Sandwich
Ingredients( you use as much or as little as you need)
left over leg of lamb - sliced thinly
fresh ciabatta or any bread you prefer
1 or 2 large onions - sliced
some balsamic vinegar, I used Verlaque Honey- infused Balsamic Reduction
sliced tomatoes or little baby tomatoes
fresh lettuce or rocket, watercress
a sprinkling of sugar if you use plain balsamic vinegar.
Method
Heat a pan on the stove and place your lamb in there without any oil. If you lamb has some fat on it, for heaven sake, do not cut it off, allow the meat to slowly brown and the fat to render out. If your lamb is very lean, add some olive oil to your pan. When the meat has browned slightly, remove from the pan and add your sliced onions to the pan. Saute until it reaches a caramel like color. Add the balsamic and sugar if you are using and allow to go all sticky and delicious in the pan. Remove and keep one side. If you are using cheery tomatoes, halve them and throw them in the same pan and allow to just warm through, but still hold their texture.
It is time to assemble you sandwich. Slice the ciabatta and butter lightly. Pile high with lettuce, the tomatoes, then the lamb and finally top it off with those uber delicious onions. Drizzle with some more of the Verlaque Balsamic Reduction.
A Sandwich made in heaven and the best way to treat left over lamb.

best wishes the Nosy Rosy team
As I Look back...
As I look back on my life
I find myself wondering...
Did I remember to thank you
for all that you have done for me?
For all of the times you were by my side
to help me celebrate my successes
and accept my defeats?
Or for teaching me the value of hard work,
good judgment, courage, and honesty?
I wonder if I've ever thanked you
for the simple things...
The laughter, smiles, and quiet times we've shared?
If I have forgotten to express my gratitude
For any of these things,
I am thanking you now...
and I am hoping that you've known all along,
how very much you are loved and appreciated.

Tamed and Framed Pet Photography

Michelle and Kerry McCann of Tamed & Framed Pet Photography are a contemporary photography team based in Cape Town, South Africa. They differ from most photographers in that they are exclusively dedicated to photographing pets and they don’t use studios. They strongly believe that studios are an unnatural, stressful environment for a pet. They only shoot in nature or in the pets home environment as this where pets are most comfortable. With Tamed & Framed clients and their pets enjoy a leisurely walk in nature while they capture every wonderful moment.
Their great love for animals and photography inspired them to start Tamed and Framed. With their special love for animals and unique talent, they create an interactive session that captures a pet’s unique spirit and character. Tamed & Framed captures character with love.

Their experience with pets enables them to draw out even the shyest, and they are happy to work with fearful or difficult animals. 90% of the pets they photograph have had no training and many of them are not socialized with other pets. Their knowledge of pet behavior and patience allows them to keep pets calm and focused on the camera. They never force a pet to do anything it’s not comfortable with, they simply wait until the pet is ready or adapt to what the pet is comfortable doing.
Tamed & Framed are 100% committed to animal welfare. They are always looking for new innovated ways to help raise funds for animal welfare organizations. As a proof of their commitment to animal welfare, and in an effort to encourage others to contribute, they donate 10% of all package fees to animal welfare organizations. When you book a shoot with Tamed & Framed, you choose an organization from their list and they deposit 10% of your package fee into the account of your choice.
Tamed & Famed work closely with organizations such as the Cape of Good Hope SPCA, LEAPS, African Tails, The Lucky Lucy Foundation amongst many others. They often donate free packages to these organizations to use as prizes or to auction off to raise funds. They also donate their time to attend and photograph events to capture images of the day and allow these organizations to use the images to raise awareness and promote their events.

If you would like to find out more about Tamed & Framed or if you are interested in booking a shoot with them you can contact them at;

Koringberg Up-Date
Koringberg is planning a Car Boot Sale Saturday the 18th. June in the village.
The response to the idea has been fantastic. This is going to be a boot sale with a slight difference. As it is being held in the platteland the concept has been slightly adapted to the area. All boots are welcome as well as bakkies and small trailers. The idea is to give not only growers of fresh produce in the area the opportunity to move some of their excess produce but for those in the surrounding communities to have an outlet for their hand/homemade crafts at a venue other than the conventional morning market set up with tables. The sight for the parking of your vehicles will be confirmed as soon as the amount of space needed has been established.
So, if you got it and don't want it, put it into the boot and flog it.

Sue Janse van Rensburg, CANSA CEO and cancer survivor of over 27 years.
“More than ever before there is a need for a concerted and coordinated fight against cancer, and I believe that CANSA can play an important part by signing the UICC declaration,” Janse van Rensburg. “This will create a global platform for cancer awareness and governmental support,” she says. The initiative will be followed in cities, towns and smaller communities throughout the country during the duration of the campaign.
The aim is to get as many South Africans as possible to give their signatures and signing the declaration for a cancer-free society. “We are part of a global campaign,” continues Van Rensburg. “At a recent UICC congress in China in 2010, CANSA made a pledge to collect signatures, and we’re aiming to collect over 10 000. We are calling on all South Africans to help us achieve the most possible signatures and change the lives of thousands.”
The World Cancer Declaration is a tool to help bring the growing cancer crisis to the attention of government leaders and health policymakers in order to significantly reduce the global cancer burden by 2020. It represents a consensus between government officials, public health experts and cancer advocates from around the world who are committed to eliminating cancer as a life-threatening disease for future generations.
Cancer kills more people than AIDS, Malaria, and TB combined and the death toll is set to rise dramatically in the coming decades.
Demonstrate your commitment to the fight against cancer by signing today at;
or
download the form and fax to 086 512 8589
or
visit your nearest CANSA office and sign the pledge.
