The Friends of Hermanus Hospital project is a non profit organisation, managed by an executive committee; it has been in action since June 2000. It is catering for a 47 bedded hospital that is responding to a population of 80,000 in the Overberg area. Every day approximately 250 patients are treated at the hospital and 1300 patients are treated in the network of clinics. Every month 100 babies are born and 130 operations are performed at the hospital. The increase in workload has driven the R70 million building project which will shortly commence to increase the bed numbers from 47 to 69 and will provide a much bigger Emergency Centre (casualty) and a second operating theatre.

Volunteer time is engaged in practical work within the hospital. A total of 2,525 volunteer hours, valued at a rate of R40 per hour, were supplied to the hospital at a value of R101, 000. This does not account for unaccounted voluntary hours work done outside the hospital. This includes knitting, clothes and toy delivery. In-house work involves filing patient documents in the hospital and clinic. This is a long sustained activity performed by a group of 20 women, many of whom have given this service for over 8 years and more. Volunteers distribute and sort clothes and St Peters Women’s Guild continue to make up and distribute baby packs. Volunteers are involved maintaining a store cupboard of clothing, soap and flannels, delivery of magazines, clothes, toys to the ward and casualty. Many of these items are sourced through requests in the Hermanus Times.

A small team of people are engaged in the X- ray Department and assist with patients and computing of information. International volunteers involve Swallows are from UK and Germany. Another volunteer provides new mothers and their new babies with touch therapy and breast feeding advice. The hospital is unique in that almost all the paintings are original and donated by local artists. Recently hospital staff chose 17 photographs to adorn the hospital walls from a collection donated by a well known local photographer. Maintenance and aesthetics of the hospital also includes supervision of gardening by talented people, many trees have been donated too.

A number of young people work as volunteers in a career shadowing capacity, to prepare for their chosen career, for example medicine. Recently 2 trainee midwives from the Netherlands were able to participate in the hospital and clinic midwifery services.

In past 10 years, it has been estimated that FHH have generated income of about 1 million rand, half of this is funds raised and half volunteers work hours.
Notable projects in which FHH was involved during the past year were pharmacy refurbishment and structural changes, upgrading the staff rest room, repainting garden pots and purchasing hospital toys.
