About us….

Ok, be honest, what is the first thing that springs to your mind when you think…”Ballroom Dancing” …Is it the Beauty and Grace of moving around the floor in a perfect Waltz or Passionate Tango? What about when you think “Latin Dancing”, is it the sensual moves of the Rumba or the sexy playfulness of the Mambo or Samba or is it the glittering skimpy costumes?

What is the next thing that comes to mind…Is it…”oh dear I would love to be able to dance like that, but I never could, I have two left feet!” or is it “I want to do that!”

Maybe it’s all of the above 

Well, whatever springs to mind, that is what we do! We are a Social Dance School which means that we teach “Professional Dances” in a “Social” way. We are a member of the South African Dance Foundation (SADF) Social Branch. The SADF has two branches, the International Competitive Branch and the Social Branch.

As a Social School we focus on the basic principles of dancing, to teach you first how to dance comfortably with any partner regardless of where or when you may dance and regardless of their knowledge or style of dancing…be it at a wedding, a braai, a party, a club… and then we progress to teach you how to move with “grace” in the Ballrooms and with “spunk” in the Latins but… without the pressure of the International Competitive World of Dance. This provides you, the Social Dancer a wide and exciting repertoire when you go out dancing. It is so much fun when you hear a song and can say, “Hey, that’s a Mambo/Tango – I can do that!” and then promptly proceed to do just that … with anyone.

Don’t get me wrong; we have plenty of Social Competitions and Functions where you get to wear glitzy, beautiful (for the ladies) or dashing (for the gents) evening wear…

Because we are affiliated with the Competitive Branch, anyone wishing to enter the more serious sporting world of dance may choose to do so and many a Social Student has done so.

Here at the Hermanus Social Ballroom and Latin Dance School, we have found that most people just want to come and have some fun and enjoy the dances. Remember we are a Dance SCHOOL and not a Dance CLUB, which means we TEACH dancing, it therefore is not a requirement that you CAN dance  just that you want to LEARN. We teach in a fun filled way using three types of lessons, Privates (one on one), Groups (dancing in groups of your own level) and then Practice sessions (Socials – where you practice what you have learned).

Bear in mind that Dancing is a physical activity and one must train one’s muscles and mind to cooperate with each other – you do not expect to go to one gym session and be fit for life… Our standard courses are a minimum of 6 months BUT you will be able to dance for the rest of your life…

Our Operating hours are:
• Private Lessons: By Appointment Mon – Fri till 21h00
• Group Lessons are Wednesdays 18h00 – 20h00
• Socials are also Wednesdays but 20h00 – 21h00

The best way to get started is to call us and book your FREE introductory lesson, this is where you get to sample a Private Lesson and we show you what we do and how we do it. We then sit with you afterwards and chat about the various packages available. Singles and couples welcome.

Enquire about specialised courses for Weddings and Matric Farewells etc.

Don’t delay, start dancing today! It’s an investment for life.

GENERAL INFO

WHY GROUPS AND SOCIALS ARE IMPORTANT BUT NOT ENOUGH ON THEIR OWN….

When we think about learning anything new, but especially something physical, we need to remember that it takes a bit of time to get our bodies shaped to do these movements and also for our brain and limbs to cooperate with each other. The more we do it the easier it gets…

Just think, you cannot go to 1 Aerobics class and be fit for the rest of your life or go to 1 Weight Training session and be pumped and cut forever, can you? Well why would you expect that from learning how to dance?

Now apart from the physical aspect, it is also a social past time, meaning that just being a good dancer is not always enough. Ask yourself: “are you a good SOCIAL dancer, meaning can you go to a party / wedding and dance with anyone? Do you know how to behave on a dance floor in order to be able to dance your craft without coming across as an arrogant, rude or inconsiderate dancer?

Well the answer to all these questions is why group classes and socials are important, but not enough on their own.

• Firstly, in the group class you learn new steps and dances (a wider repertoire so as not to get bored or be boring on the floor). You also get the opportunity to test your leading and following skills with different people. If you only dance with one partner, you don’t really hone your skills because you get to know each other’s “cheats”. This is not a good session however for honing and perfecting steps because there are generally many people on the floor and only a few teachers.
• the private lessons are there to “tone” your dancing – work on your balance, posture, “light-footed-ness” - polishing of steps etc. and new steps of course (but that’s not the major focus) – there is nothing worse for instance than for a lady to hear, “she is a heavy dancer” or for a gent to hear “he rips my arms out of my sockets”… you know what I mean? ;o) – that is why we are here – right?
• Lastly, the social is the opportunity to practice all you have worked on in your “learning sessions” and apply them to the dance floor in a fully controlled environment, where you can ask questions, and so build your confidence to dance more regularly ANYWHERE in public…. This is where you really ‘’learn ‘’ how to dance socially….But once again without the focus of the private lesson and practice of the group lesson; it would take many years to really learn how to dance.

Hope to see you all on the groups and socials as well as your private lessons 
