Overstrand Association for Persons with Disabilities (APD)
Social Work Services
Disability Services is one of the specialist fields in Social Work. At APD we provide a Social Work, community development and therapeutic service to persons with Disabilities. At present we have 50 active clients registered on the database and focus on various disability types. We are based in Hawston and currently provide services in Hawston, Mount Pleasant and Zwelihle.
Services rendered are based on the needs /problems of disabled people in the community
• Lack of special needs schools in the area
• Lack of appropriate housing for disabled people in the community
• Transportation
• Health issues
• Recreation
• Job opportunities
• Access difficulties for wheelchair users
• Wheelchair users needing support with wheelchair repairs
• Parenting support dealing with children’s challenging behaviour
• Support/advice for newly diagnosed clients
I am a firm believer in working in partnership and have established working relationships with other professionals. I would like to thank the Social Workers, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, nurses, carers and interpreters for their support.
CASE WORK
I started with initial assessments and realised there is a huge need for services for disabled people in the community. The challenges faced by disabled people are numerous. I continue to offer support to disabled adults, children and their parents and would refer service users to other organisations when it is appropriate. My particular interest is supporting parents to manage their children’s challenging behaviour. I do this by offering a short version of Triple P (Positive Parenting Programme for children with special needs)
GROUP WORK
We currently have weekly groups where parents, children and adults take part in arts and craft activities. Whale paper mosaic bookmarks made by the group will be sold at the Whale festival in September. It is very important to recognise our volunteers. Thank you for your time and energy that you have devoted over the past few months. We won’t be able to run these groups without you.
