Wino Forever

... the odour of Burgundy, and the smell of French sauces, and the sight of clean napkins and long loaves, knocked as a very welcome visitor at the door of our inner man.

Three Men in a Boat

Let your boat of life be light, packed with only what you need - a homely home and simple pleasures, one or two friends, worth the name, someone to love and someone to love you, a cat, a dog, and a pipe or two, enough to eat and enough to wear, and a little more than enough to drink; for thirst is a dangerous thing.

The smell of wine, oh how much more delicate, cheerful, gratifying, celestial and delicious it is than that of oil.
Rabelias
Gargantua

He said that few people had intellectual resources sufficient to forgo the pleasures of wine. They could not otherwise contrive how to fill the interval between dinner and supper.
Samuel Johnson
Boswell's Life of Johnson

I can certainly see that you know your wine. Most of the guests who stay here wouldn't know the difference between Bordeaux and Claret.

A harvest fest with a difference

The proof of the pudding lies in the eating! How true this is. One cannot claim that you are marketing a product or area by only placing expensive advertisements in exclusive publications...and now I have probably tread on some sensitive toes!

Nothing beats experiencing, living, feeling and tasting something- to really know it and love it. That is why I am so happy when a community comes up with an idea such as the Stanford Oesfees Challenge.

A first for this area, the Oesfees was the brainchild of Hermanus Adventures and some enterprising individuals from Stanford and aimed to combine the adrenaline of mountain biking and trail running with scenic beauty, wine, beer and grappa tasting and fun, fun, fun! Well organised and lovingly put together by this group of passionate Stanford aficionados, the fest was indeed a heady experience that will entice visitors back to the area time and again.

Held on 19 March at the breathtaking Sir Robert Stanford Estate just outside Stanford, the Oesfees kicked off with some early morning exercise in the form of challenging mountain biking, a trail run and canoe race. Hermanus Adventures donated 20% of the profits of this competition to Hospice. Fun outdoor activities such as tractor rides in the vineyards, a Kiddies Corner, Beer Tent and a Arts and Craft Market attracted hundreds of enthusiastic visitors.

Sir Robert Stanford Estate is of course a winery, hence the harvest festival. Surrounded by some well-known and award-winning wineries such as Raka, Springfield, Brunia, Boschrivier, Misty Mountain, Walkerbay Vineyards and Stanford Hills, all the winemakers joined forces to offer visitors a taste of the fruit of the vines while delectable vino could be acquired at cellar prices.

Showing that winemaking can be fun, Stanford Hills and Springfontein offered a Barrel Race Challenge while Brunia staged a Target Golf ‘shoot out’ Challenge and Madré’s Kitchen pitched in with a Biggest Pumpkin Challenge. Because of the heat , Misty Mountains and Boschrivier’s grape stomping plans did not take off. Maybe next time, because there is something very gratifying and earthy about grape stomping...

One of the jewels at Sir Robert Stanford Estate is the Grappa and Witblitz Stookhuis (distillery) where Johan de Villiers and Lydia Oosthuizen are still making this heady stuff in the traditional way, by hand. They have now also started making Calvados – a fact that pleases me no end as my bottleof this intoxicating liquor from Honfleur in Normandy is long gone...I couldn’t stay long at the Stookhuis but vowed to return with friends one Saturday morning to linger on the stoep!

The Oesfees ended elegantly with a word by the Overstrand executive mayor, Nicolette Botha-Guthrie and a Summer Concert presented by the talented girl band Sterling EQ at the natural amphitheatre on the farm. What more can one ask of lifethan a picnic on the lawn, listening to the sounds of four stunning girls’ electrifying mix of rock and classic while watching the biggest moon in twenty years rising over the Stookhuis...Good to know that the organisers already decided to do it again!

Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach's sake and thine often infirmities
1 Timothy, 5:23

A man cannot make him laugh - but that's no marvel;
he drinks no wine.
