Disa Time! This member of the orchid family, the red disa (Disa uniflora) has a fascinating pollination system. It is pollinated exclusively by the mountain pride butterfly (Meneris tulbaghia). While most insects cannot see red, the mountain pride butterfly is only attracted to this colour.  Reserves such as Limietberg, Jonkershoek and Kogelberg are good destinations if you seek the beautiful red disa. Look for it along the edges of streams and in rock crevices that get water. The red disa flowers from January through to March, so don’t miss the chance to see it in bloom.
